Positive Psychology Learning: About Karen Guggenheim

Positive Psychology Learning: About Karen Guggenheim

Karen Guggeheim is a social entrepreneur and is the founder of the World Happiness Summit (WoHaSu). In the face of overwhelming and sudden loss, Karen made a choice for a lifelong goal and that goal was happiness. Karen is committed to making the world a happier place and is doing so by investing in and supporting happiness initiatives, such as the World Happiness Summit.

In 2013 and after 21 years of marriage, Karen suffered the unexpected loss of her husband. With two children to raise, Karen knew that she had to find a way to overcome such overwhelming loss and that way was to be a conscious decision to choose to be happy. Without wanting to be pitied or to succumb to depression, step by step, she focused on her goal: Happiness.

It was Karen’s spiritual practice, her close relationships with friends and family and her strong, innate resilience, that enabled her to survive. On her journey to happiness and finding purpose and meaning after her significant loss, one of the first things that Karen decided to do was to change her mindset.

Instead of hiding away, Karen started studying for an MBA and slowly but surely, happiness began to re-enter her life and this is something that she encouraged to blossom. Upon graduating from her MBA, Karen forged a successful career in a new job and yet still she felt unfulfilled and somewhat stressed and anxious. To protect the happiness that she had worked so hard for, Karen searched for a purpose again in her life.

This was another life changing moment for Karen and led her to create the World Happiness Summit, which has the intention of creating a highly interactive summit, where participants have the opportunity to experience yoga, meditation, live musical entertainment, break away sessions and keynote speeches from top experts in positive psychology, government, sustainability, economics, mindfulness, technology, business and media.

The success of the 2017 World Happiness Summit means that the summit will now be an annual event and the efforts by Karen and her team were rewarded by the Mayor of Miami, who proclaimed March 19th “Make Miami Happy Day” and gave them the key to the City of Miami.
